Andy Mulhern
Vocoustics PresentsThe Tunnels - Wednesday 3rd August - 4 from 8pmEwan MacFarlane, the enigmatic and captivating front man with the band The Grim Northern Social, returns to Aberdeen for his first acoustic show since recording the new GNS album. As he continues his one-man-and-his-guitar tour around Scotland, don't miss the chance to see his songs in their purest form - six strings and a voice. Ewan's acoustic sets highlight the fragile beauty of the bands songs and why he is rated as one of the best songwriters and performers that Scotland has produced in the last 10 years. The GNS have described by some critics as the "bastard sons of working class hero's.", and they cite a wide range of influences, including David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Curtis Mayfield. Their sound is an eclectic blend of ambient frequencies, wounded ghost-like lyrics, combined with explosive choruses and fractured guitar howls creating a vast soundscape of love, life and urban fantasy. The band toured throughout 2003 and 2004 to promote their self-titled debut album with performances at both 'T in the Park', and the 'South by South West' Festival (Austin, Texas). They also appeared as the guests of several touring artists including Elvis Costello, Simple Minds, The Proclaimers and The Cosmic Rough Riders. The album spawned the hits 'Honey' and 'Urban Pressure' and was voted in at #13 in Rolling Stone 'Top 100 Albums of the Year' 2003.The eagerly awaited new album has great potential having been recorded at the famous Sawmill's Studios in Cornwall with renowned producer John Cornfield (Oasis, Stone Rose, Supergrass, The Verve, Razorlight and many others). "...[as] he pushes his larynx to ever loftier heights with a string of unfeasible whoops, hollers and shrieks [...] it's clear he's that rare thing - a natural born star." (Play Music, Feb 04)"...already tipped as one of the nation's best-kept secrets, The Grim Northern Social frontman has been gathering acclaim for his solo acoustic shows. Anyone who has seen him belting out GNS tunes like Snap the Imposters will tell you its an unforgettable experience."
