recording drums on audacity

If you really want to use a free program, try something better than audacity, look in the post Hog made where I have posted some links to reaper/kristal/somethingelse I can't remember the name of.

Depending on how you want to tackle the recording...you will need at least 2 mics and a decent sound card with some sort of mic pre amp....if you have a little mixer you can use as many mics as it will take and submix it to the stereo input on your sound card, or if you have a multiple channel soundcard, patch it's direct outs to the inputs. Ideally you would want at least 3 mics for mono drums, and 4 for stereo. A large diaphragm dynamic on the kick snare (SM57 or 58 would be fine) and a small diaphragm condensor over the drum kit, experiment with placement. You can use 2 small diaphragm condensors over the drums and pan each mic left and right according to the side of the kit they're on. Behringer sell a matched pair of condensors for £40. For that sort of money they ain't going to sound like anything but a harsh electronic sound, so you save £160 on buying the AKG C1000S mics for the same sound ;) Of course if you have a big soundcard (delta 1010 etc) you can mic up each drum, stick two mics on the snare (top and bottom) or whatever. In your software the 8 channels are probably represented as 4 stereo channels, so you would assign 1 L to track 1, 1 R to track 2, 2 L to track 3 etc and so fourth....

Audacity looks piss poor, its the sort of program you'd imagine Win 3.1 to be running.

I won't bother mentioning that the drummer needs to be able to play and the kit needs to be properly tuned and sounding great in a nice room etc....someone else who knows these details better can :D

If in doubt, stick up a cheap shit mic, hit record, then sit for hour recreating your recorded drums in MIDI by lining notes up to peaks in the WAV file, and use some decent recorded drums. Just bought this, fucking fantastic!!
