Edgar Prais in the Herald

"This band were initially called Edgar Prais and the Sloppy Drunk Boys when they first emerged in spring this year; once the myspace generation started latching on to their joyous, shambolic indie-rock singalongs, they ditched the alcoholic hangers-on and decided to get serious.

Comprising of members who used to be in highly rated Aberdeen acts including Alyssa's Wish and De Barros, this is definitely a band to catch if you can. And that's high "prais" indeed."

What's the deal with Edgar Prais?

I was reading the P&J on Saturday and saw this:

WOMEN HAVE INVENTED STORIES, SAYS RAPE ACCUSED

08:50 - 30 September 2006

Two young women who claim they were raped by the same man are liars who invented the stories, their alleged attacker insisted yesterday.

Michael Lewis, who is also known as Mark Prento, told the High Court in Aberdeen that his first alleged victim was "attention seeking" and had cried rape because she was jealous that he was seeing other women.

The other woman had probably lied to try to save her relationship with her long-term boyfriend, he said.

Prento was fairly indiscreet about his sexual liaisons and she was probably worried that her boyfriend would hear about their night together, he told the jury.

Defence witnesses testified that they had seen the first alleged victim out with Prento several times after he allegedly raped her between December 8 and 25 last year.

They said the pair seemed close and the woman regarded Prento as her boyfriend.

His girlfriend Seanne Lily, who was having an open relationship with him at the time, said she had seen the 23-year-old with Prento on numerous occasions after the alleged rape. She added that the woman had always seemed jealous when she and Prento were standing together.

Another woman said she had been out for a meal with 31-year-old Prento, the alleged victim, and others in February. She left the restaurant with him that night and the alleged victim had been angry about it, she said.

During his time on the stand, Prento said the woman was trying to hurt him and tarnish his name.

He added that she had probably not properly thought through making the rape allegation, and said she was "not the sharpest tool in the box".

Prento denied forcing himself on the alleged victims, and claimed he never had intercourse with the second.

He did not have condoms and she did not want to have unprotected sex, so they stopped short of having intercourse, he said when questioned by defence counsel Edgar Prais QC.

She had told the court that she was "wasted on drink and drugs" and that Prento took advantage of her, pinning her down on the bed while he raped her on February 21.

He said in his evidence that she had not seemed particularly drunk or wasted to him.

Defence witnesses said she had been flirting with Prento during the evening.

Prento also said the 24-year-old had told him she was having problems with her boyfriend, something she had denied.

He claimed her boyfriend phoned her from offshore at about 6am, and she had "shooshed" him while she spoke to her partner. He said he had been upset when told of the rape allegations.

During cross-examination by advocate depute Andrew Lamb QC, Prento said the women had corresponded with each other.

He conceded it was "a great misfortune" that two girls who did not know each other had independently made allegations of rape against him.

Prento also told the jury of his busy champagne-quaffing social life, which saw him going out several nights a week, despite being unemployed and getting only about £100 a fortnight in benefits.

He also used that money to buy cocaine and cannabis, but supplemented his income by DJ-ing, cutting people's hair, and copying CDs.

Prento, a prisoner in Aberdeen, denies raping the women at his Nelson Court flat and has lodged a special defence of consent.

He also denies threatening the first alleged victim and leaving threatening messages for the second woman's boyfriend.

The trial, before Lord MacLean, continues on Tuesday.

So, did the band name themselves after this lawyer guy?

Brave move, I guess if anyone's going to sue you, it would be him!

Sue them for what exactly.....

If you could sue for using a name the courts would be full of John Smith 24/7...o_O

I believe Mr Prais in his capacity as Queens council had a hand in sending an Aberdeen musician to jail for a few years....

Kinda...

He was said musician's defence and we thought he did a sterling job, regardless of results, so it's more of a respect thing, and he likes it.
